own 400 ton slipway which as you know I operated for 15 years. 

The things that impressed me most are as follows:- 

Staff attitude.  Your guys are a happy bunch and obviously enjoy their work.  This made for a pleasant working environment. 

Knowledge.  Your tradesmen know their stuff and nothing is too much trouble. 

Outside labour.  I have never been in a town where there is such a variety of excellent tradesmen and the fact that most of them have boats of their own makes their understanding of my requirements so much better. 

Attention to detail.    Your tradesmen are multi skilled and take immense pride in their work. 

Whangarei.  A great town to relax in with its excellent scenery and surfing beaches.   The climate is incredible especially in summer. 

Hospitality.  The Friday afternoon B.B.Q.  is a nice touch and was very much appreciated. 

To sum it up the effort that you went to to make my stay as pain free as possible is very much appreciated.  I had a very tight budget to work with and you finished the refit under time and under budget.  CONGRATULATIONS.

Jim Loynes, Oceania Marine Yacht Liaison, coordinated the arrival of the vessel at the shipyard – “We are very pleased to have “My Girl” visit our yard as it highlights the great facilities we have here for vessels of this class”. She joins two other refit projects currently underway at Oceania Marine.

SY Cavu - Superyacht Refit Commences

Eighteen months ago Cavu was hauled out, side-shifted off the slipway and placed in storage at the Oceania Marine Shipyard pending the sale of the vessel. Brokerage was handled by Lars Bjorklund from Ocean Independence’s Auckland Office and it required all his years of experience to get a successful and satisfactory outcome for all concerned. Oceania Marine Managing Director, Martin Gleeson states “The new owners are Australian nationals and have been dreaming of the day when they can sail Cavu away and cruise the great Barrier Reef and beyond – this boat could not have gone to nicer people and we are so pleased that she is in the hands of someone who will look after her”.

Oceania Marine Project Manager Clinton Hall is overseeing the refit – “We have an extensive worklist and are concentrating on establishing budgets for essential items first

and once that is done we will work with the owners on other ‘nice to have’ items to see what can be squeezed in within the time and funds available”, he said. The owners are anxious to get as much done as possible before they leave New Zealand to take advantage of lower Kiwi currency exchange rates, lower NZ labour rates and the very high skill levels for superyacht refits available locally in Whangarei.

The EVO range of WFSV’s starts at 18 meters and extends to 24 metres. They can be adapted to client requirement and are based on advanced semi-displacement or high speed catamaran platforms. From a design perspective EVO models apply innovative solutions to overcome operational problems and shortcomings in existing service vessels.

Flagship of the range is the EVO24-FA-12. This craft is a stunning performer with a top speed of 40 knots and service speeds well over 30 knots. When the sea-state deteriorates this vessel really comes into its own, being able to maintain high speeds as well as comfortable and stable conditions onboard for passengers. It does this by way of a unique marriage of technology involving hull form, propulsion system and foil-assist.

The target market is initially Europe and EVO vessels will be priced landed, commissioned and ready to go at the client’s port. The price is highly competitive with an added advantage of being constructed to New Zealand quality standards.

Launching Watson 60 Motor Yacht at Oceania Marine Shipyard

Marine Shipyard. Pre-dawn on Monday she arrived by transporter at the yard and slipped quietly into the water later that day. She now undergoes sea trials prior to final handover to the owners.

The trawler style yacht is designed for long distance cruising and exploring distant places.

Black Pearl - Preparing Access & Protection

The vessel has just completed an extensive cruise of the South West Pacific. Initially she departed New Zealand shores from Nelson to visit the owner’s home city, Melbourne. From there she made passage to the Queensland coast to put in an appearance at Sanctuary Cove Boat Show where she was the highlight of the show. Immediately afterwards she headed out into the Pacific amongst the magnificent island groups that fill this part of Oceania. Her course was Northwest through New Caledonian, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands into Papua New Guinea. With the owner spending as much time on board as he could manage the vessel made its way to the outer reaches of Oceania at the Northern tip of New Ireland before turning around and heading back to New Zealand.

For Black Pearl this has been just the beginning because as soon as she completes her haulout at Oceania Marine she will be loaded on Dockwise for transport to Europe. There she plans to spend the 2012 season in the Mediterranean exploring everything from the Black Sea to Gibraltar. Thus begins a 3 year world cruise back to the South Pacific via the Caribbean.

As to Black Pearl herself, Paul states “We are very happy with the boat – everything has worked well and she has met every expectation that I and the owner had. We have done a lot of miles in the last 10 months and even the tender has 450 hours on the clock”. So no doubt Paul will be looking forward to completing the haulout and might even get some ‘R&R’ for Christmas.

Oceania Marine Project Manager Brent Charlesworth has the paint team detailing the Awlcraft 2000 SE paint system originally applied by the yard when the vessel was built – “It’s a metallic and pearlescent ‘Special Effect’ paint system and this was one of the first projects where it was used so I was interested to see how it has stood up. I must say I am pleasantly surprised how good it looks, given the extensive use the vessel has had since it was launched. By the time we have finished Black Pearl will be at her sparkling best”.
