Refit Experience at Oceania Marine Shipyards Exceeds Expectations

The crew of 20 metre (66’) Gunboat Slim made Port Whangarei, Northland New Zealand their home for 7 months whilst undertaking a refit at Oceania Marine Shipyards. The sail catamaran was hauled out via the 100T travel lift at South Shipyard and the work completed undercover at the Marine Centre in Refit Shed Bay 3.

The refit scope involved nearly all aspects of the vessel including its tenders. Oceania Marine provided overall project management and administration with the works undertaken by their skilled trades teams. Oceania Marine Coatings applied the technically challenging Awlcraft SE basecoat/clearcoat system, involving metallic and pearlescent finishes. External specialist sub-contractors were also employed in relevant areas demonstrating the wider expertise and resources available at Port Whangarei.

The crew worked hard on their assigned tasks alongside shipyard staff and vessel skipper Travis describes their experience as follows:-

“Taking on the task of a thorough refurbishment of Gunboat 66 SLIM at Oceania Marine Centre exceeded our expectations in every aspect. From the meticulous repainting to the thorough repowering and custom work, every detail was handled with remarkable precision and care thanks to in house specialists as well specialists all based in Whangarei like Whangarei Marine Centre and NissNiss rigging.

Oceania Marine Centre’s painting team demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to perfection. The finished product showcased a depth and richness of colour that far surpassed what we had imagined. The attention to detail was evident in the preparation of each stage reflecting their mastery and dedication to their craft.

The decision to repower SLIM was met with thorough consultation and expertise from Whangarei Marine Centre. The installation was executed seamlessly. The enhanced performance and efficiency of our yacht post-refit were immediately noticeable, reaffirming the competence and professionalism of the team.

What truly set Oceania Marine Centre apart was their ability to cater to our custom requests with finesse. Whether it was the installation of specialized equipment, the modification of onboard spaces of furniture, structural carbon work, custom shaft locks or improving the noise problem of our generator exhaust system, they approached each task with creativity and skill.

Throughout the entire refit process, from initial consultation to final delivery, Oceania Marine Centre maintained an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. Their communication was clear and responsive, ensuring we were always informed and involved in decision-making. The professionalism and friendliness of their staff made the experience enjoyable and as stress-free as such a large refit could be.
